Moreover, such public networks are clearly not managed with user security in mind, but rather with ease of access in mind.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"575\" data-end=\"1094\">The most serious real threats to public Wi-Fi are practices that sound technical in theory, but are used every day in practice: <strong data-start=\"723\" data-end=\"763\">false hotspots (so-called \u201cevil twin\u201d \u2013 which we will mention in the next chapter)<\/strong>, which mimic and impersonate real networks to lure unsuspecting users and intercept their data. In practice, however, such networks are often <strong data-start=\"203\" data-end=\"277\">they have no security and are an easy target for cybercriminals<\/strong>. Every hotspot you can connect your device to is a potential attack surface\u2014and not just in theory, but in the real mechanisms hackers use.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"485\" data-end=\"547\"><span style=\"color: #f94d1c; font-size: 20px;\">1) Man-in-the-middle attack \u2013 eavesdropping and data theft<\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"548\" data-end=\"951\">The most serious threat in public networks is the so-called. <strong data-start=\"606\" data-end=\"627\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atak_man_in_the_middle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">man-in-the-middle<\/a><\/strong>, which is when a cybercriminal comes between your device and the Wi-Fi access point to <strong data-start=\"726\" data-end=\"768\">intercept and read transmitted data<\/strong>. In this configuration, a hacker can track the websites you visit, your logins, passwords, and even your payment card details before they are shared further online.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"953\" data-end=\"1022\"><span style=\"color: #f94d1c; font-size: 20px;\">2) Fake &quot;evil twin&quot; hotspots - sneaky network substitution<\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1023\" data-end=\"1434\">\u201e<strong data-start=\"1024\" data-end=\"1037\">Evil twin<\/strong>\u201d&quot; is one of the most commonly used tools: a hacker sets up a hotspot <strong data-start=\"1113\" data-end=\"1157\">a name very similar to the legal network<\/strong> (e.g., &quot;Cafe_WiFi_Free&quot;), so users think it&#039;s an official network and connect. Once connected, all their traffic passes through the attacker&#039;s machine, which can be analyzed, modified, or used to log into the victim&#039;s accounts.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1436\" data-end=\"1495\"><span style=\"color: #f94d1c; font-size: 20px;\">3) Intercepting information without strong encryption<\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1496\" data-end=\"1937\">Many public hotspots don&#039;t use strong encryption or no encryption at all. This means <strong data-start=\"1613\" data-end=\"1713\">information sent by the device can travel across the network in a readable form<\/strong> &quot;packet sniffing&quot; tools.
